Migraine and Headache Pain
Migraine headaches are now ranked number 19 among all diseases causing disability worldwide by the World Health Organization. Head pain can be classified into two general types: primary and secondary headaches.
Primary Headaches
Primary headaches include migraine, tension and cluster headaches, as well as several other less common types. Most experts maintain that primary headaches are caused by a combination of vascular and neurological disorders in the head and neck.
A migraine headache causes intense throbbing or pulsing pain in the head that is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Symptoms are usually aggravated by routine activity. Migraine attacks can cause significant pain for hours to days. The pain can be so severe that sufferers can only think about finding a dark, quiet place to lie down.
Secondary Headaches
Headaches that have underlying causes related to structural or functional disorders in the head or neck are classified as secondary headaches. There are numerous causes of this type of headache ranging from bleeding in the brain, aneurism, tumor, meningitis and encephalitis.
